Etta Mae Stokes Stewart Obituary

Etta Mae Stokes Stewart was born September 13, 1936, in Ozark, Alabama, to the late Charlie Mack Stokes and Lola Snell Stokes. She was called home on October 10, 2025, at age 89. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Etta lived a life marked by faith, kindness, and a deep commitment to family and community.

Etta was known for her warmth, generosity, sense of humor, and steadfast spirit. After earning her Bachelor of Science Degree from Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, AL, in 1958, Etta taught Home Economics for many years. Etta was always the first to lend a hand, offer a comforting word, or share a home-cooked meal with anyone in need.

Besides her parents, Etta was preceded in death by her brothers: Charles Gaynor, Vernon Stokes Sr., Charlie Mack Stokes Jr., and George Stokes, and sisters: Ada Raspberry, Elsie Stokes, and Pauline Rogers.

Etta leaves to mourn two sisters: Erma Turner (Bill) of Indianapolis, IN, and Leutrisher Bryant (Luther) of Kenly, NC. Etta also leaves to mourn one brother (Spencer Stokes) of Dothan, AL.

Etta joined First Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She found joy in completing word search puzzles, watching Family Feud, Perry Mason, and westerns. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchild, who lovingly called her "Mae-Mae".

Etta is survived by three children: Loretta Mindingall, Ozark, AL, Francinia Johnson, Ozark, AL, and COL Maurice Stewart (Ret.) (Dr. Juanita), Orlando, FL, as well as three grandchildren (Brandie Stewart, San Antonio, TX, Maquita Irvin Andrews, Pasadena, CA, and Tabitha Stewart, Ozark, AL), two great-grandchildren (Makayla Stewart, Ozark, AL and Kaedyn Cummings, Norfolk, VA), two nephews that she helped raise (Patrick Raspberry, Longview, TX, Charles Jones Jr. (Clarksville, TN), and a host of other nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Her love and light will live on in all who knew her.
