Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jimmie Lee Horton went back home to his Savior, Jesus Christ, at 6:28 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2017. He was 89.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Newman Mortuary. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Ozark with Rev. Ronsard Broussard officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Travelers Rest Cemetery in Ozark. Flowers are accepted.
Mr. Horton was born Monday, May 21, 1928, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 24 and served his country faithfully for 22 years. He was a Korean War veteran. During his years of service he was awarded several awards, including the United Nations Service Medal; Korean Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and Army Commendation Medal. He spent much of his military service as a food service specialist. Aside from his military service, Mr. Horton attended Wallace College to pursue certifications in carpentry and brick masonry. Mr. Horton accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior later in life after he attended Shiloh Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he was also a deacon.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, Mr. Horton is preceded in death by a sister, Willie Mae Collier; and two daughters, Katie Ward and Cynthia Moses.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Josephine Floyd Horton; five loving daughters, Brenda (Charles) Lovett, Portia Horton; Deborah (Liz) Ruley; Alicia Fells, and Cynthia (Aaron) Warner; three devoted sons, Joseph Floyd, Jimmie Lee (Lisa) Horton, and Murray Horton; one son-in-law, James Ward; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Albert Floyd; two sisters-in-law, Edna Hoskins and Peggy Mackins; a dear friend, Bro. James (Frances) Harris; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
