On August 3, 2023, Martha Jackson transitioned from her earthly home to her forever home. She was 65 years old.
Martha was born in Barbour County, Alabama to the late Cleveland Shipman, Sr. and Armary Flournoy Shipman.
Martha received her early education at Clio Elementary School and graduated from Clio High School. She then attended Troy University, and during her tenure, she was a member of the Troy State volleyball team. She earned a bachelor’s degree in social work upon graduating from the university.
After graduating from Troy, Martha returned to Barbour County as a social worker for the county. In 1982, her daughter, Emily, was born and she became a stay-at-home mother.
Martha was a member of St. Louis Baptist Church in Elamville, Alabama, and later joined Friendship A.M.E Church in Ozark.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Dr. Jerry Shipman, Cleveland Shipman, Jr., and Rickey Pernell Shipman.
Martha was a true warrior having withstood cancer. Her fighting spirit carried her for many years following its remission.
She is survived by her husband, Wilbur, whose partnership spans more than four decades, and the true joy of her life, her daughter, Emily.
Also, left to cherish her memories are two sisters: Sherri (Leo) Thomas and Oretha (Jerry) Dukes; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
