Death Notice

On Saturday September 5th Mattie Thornton went to be with her Heavenly Father. She passed at her residence at 96 years of age.

 

Obituary

Sister Mattie Bernice Thornton was the daughter of the late Mrs. Rosie Brown and Mr. Bishop Dyek of Ozark, Alabama. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined The Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home, September 5, 2020 at 8:01 pm. Sister Mattie enjoyed cooking and feeding the whole neighborhood. She also enjoyed having fun and eating with the ladies known as the “Walking Stick Club”, that included the late Mrs. Phreddye Broome-Dixon, the late Mrs. Gussie Lee Dick and the late Mrs. Catherine Casey.

Sister Mattie was preceded in death by her mother and father; three brothers, Alvin, Ben and Louis Bouiye; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Smith and Mrs. Everie Shipmon; and three children. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Deacon Oscar Thornton, and they were blessed with 11 children (twin boys and a daughter died shortly after birth).

She leaves to cherish her memory Pastor James (NathaLee) Thornton, Mrs. Pearlie Carter, Mrs. Barbara Stewart, Ms. Mattye McCray, Mrs. Rosie Matthews, Mr. Oscar Thornton, all of Ozark, Alabama; Mr. Earl Thornton, Jefferson, Wisconsin; Mr. David (Dorene) Thornton, Birmingham, Alabama; one adopted son, Mr. Cleveland (Pat) Ashley, Columbus, Georgia; one sister, Mrs. Lena White, Ozark, Alabama; a very special great-great granddaughter, Jenna Reynolds; a special caregiver, Maria Williams; a special friend, Deacon Willie C. Jones; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren; special nephews, James and Ben Bouiye; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
